Mumbai is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra and is the most populated city in India. Some believe that it is the most populated in the world, as it is home to about 13 million residents. Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai is home India’s film and television industry, which is well known as “Bollywood”. During the year there are many film festivals that feature both Bollywood and Hollywood blockbusters.
The most popular tourist activity in Mumbai is a visit to the Gateway of India, which is an archway built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary. The structure is intricately designed with latticework carved into the yellow basalt stone. Although it is a symbol of colonialism, the structure has now come to represent the Indian culture and is a great place to start when exploring Mumbai.
